September, 22, 1996*: Larry Graf, president of Glacier Bay Catamarans in Monroe, Wash., and Troy Shields, general manager of Todd Marine in Virginia Beach, Va., sped 728 miles from Lynnhaven Inlet at Virginia Beach to Northeast Rock light off St. George’s in 36 and a half hours. (The two made the trip answering a challenge set forth by Boating Magazine. It proposed a New York to Bermuda run in a powerboat under 40 feet, emphasizing safety and the newest fuel-efficient technologies and hull shapes, says Richard Stepler, Boating’s editor-in-chief.) July 17, 1999**: Del Lippert (Raytheon Marine), Forrest Munden (World Cat Boats) and Matt Connery (Adventure Marketing) broke the powerboat speed record from New York City to Bermuda. They left New York on a 26 foot World Cat Catamaran with twin 150hp outboards. They completed the 780 mile trip in the unofficial time of 29 hours, 19 minutes. (The Bermuda Challenge trophy is a perpetual trophy awarded by Boating Magazine to the current record holder.)

July 17, 2002***: Neil Burnie and Bill Ratlieff left Liberty Landing Marina on July 17, 2002 at 1:55 pm. They completed the run in their a 30-ft. Renaissance Prowler 306 catamaran in just 22 hours and 23 minutes, shattered the previously held record by over 7 hours. (Read the article)
